A word from the creator, Gyoungtae Hong

October 4, 2024

Gyoungtae Hong, the artist behind Hello, Delight!, explains the origins and motivations behind the new interactive exhibition in Borough Yards, London.

Hello, Delight!, the third exhibition in the ‘Delight Exhibition’ series, presents a novel approach to exploring and concretizing the duality of urban life through the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This exhibition pays homage to “Hello, World!”, reminding us that AI is already deeply integrated into many aspects of modern society. However, rather than simply showcasing AI-generated outputs, we aim to explore new forms of artistic expression by utilizing AI as a creative tool.

In this exhibition, AI is actively employed in various capacities — from data mining and interactive technologies to deep learning and AI agents — to produce creative outcomes. AI is used across multiple artistic domains, including digital photography, image processing software, video editing, and text organization. The human artist establishes the ideas and concepts, using AI as a tool to further the creative process. The artist then evaluates and refines the AI outputs, with the scope of AI’s application expanding in different directions depending on the nature of each work.

Hello, Delight! seeks to broaden communication with viewers, transforming their abstract ideas into tangible cultural expressions through innovative uses of AI. Visitors can explore the duality of urban life and its significance while experiencing AI-generated creative outputs first hand. This approach expands the identity of Hello, Delight! and offers visitors a unique opportunity to directly engage with new artistic approaches.

Ultimately, Hello, Delight! strives to express the diverse facets of city life in innovative ways by combining human creativity with the technological possibilities of AI. We invite visitors to immerse themselves in a new realm of artistic communication and creation, where art and technology coexist in harmony, offering fresh perspectives on urban experiences.

Gyoungtae Hong leverages advanced technology to craft immersive experiences deeply rooted in the sociocultural exploration of Seoul. He draws inspiration from ancient Korean myths, the humanistic values inherent in Korea’s historical architecture, and the dynamic interplay of light and sound from the ever-present sun and moon, as well as the symbolic significance of urban neon signs in Seoul. Extending beyond traditional visual storytelling, his works invite participants to step into distinct eras and environments, becoming voyagers through the passage of time. In his upcoming London exhibition, he harnesses Seoul’s moonlight, sunlight, legends, and primal sounds to forge a philosophical connection that transcends the constraints of both time and space, seamlessly linking Seoul and London.

Hong’s diverse artworks have been showcased in various countries, including Paris, New York, Washington and Dubai.

"Hello, Delight!" is an interactive exhibition that offers a unique cultural journey. Visitors can experience personalized poetry, become a K-drama protagonist, and explore Moon Song shaped by their voice while discovering virtual cityscapes. The exhibition seamlessly combines creativity and technology to create an immersive experience.
